The process of creating or revamping your website can seem a daunting task. It's a tall order to design a website that's not only clean, modern, and organized - but functional and effective as well. Every time our team designs a new website or updates an existing one, there are 4 important things that if we succeed in getting right - we know we did a good job. Of course there's a lot more that goes into website design, but if you get these 4 points right, you'll be well on your way to having a great website.
1. A CLEAR HEADER
A header that spells out precisely what you offer. This is the first thing your customers will see. Make sure that it explains, in two seconds, what you have to offer. Your header is not the place to be cute or clever or vague. If you confuse people here, they’ll leave.
2. TALK ABOUT YOUR CUSTOMERS, NOT YOURSELF
Don’t talk about yourself too much. Your customer is asking “What’s in this for me?” Talk about their problems and how you can help them, rather than talking about yourself and your qualifications. Save that for your about page, and a few other places where it's a natural fit.
3. CUT OUT THE CLUTTER
Make sure you have a strategic reason for every single element and word on your site.
4. SPEAK CLEARLY & SIMPLY
Speak in plain English and avoid industry lingo, insider-only terms, or industry abbreviations as much as possible. Unless you’re a high-tech firm selling high-tech equipment, your audience isn’t likely to know as much as you right off the bat. So speak clearly and simply as much as possible.
